Canadian composer Jeffrey Ryan’s varied catalogue ranges from opera, art song, and choral music to chamber and orchestral works.

His music has been performed by such ensembles as the Encounters Ensemble, the Elmer Iseler Singers, CBC Vancouver Orchestra, the Toronto String Quartet, the Orillia Wind Ensemble, the South Dakota Symphony, Brandon Chamber Players, the June in Buffalo Chamber Ensemble, and the Bowling Green Philharmonia. He graduated in 1984 with an Honours Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfred Laurier University and received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music composition from The Cleveland Institute of Music in 1995.

He has received commissions from the Cleveland Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Esprit Orchestra, Arditti Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, and Tapestry New Opera.

He currently works as a freelance composer in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“When talking about music,” says Ryan, “we often borrow words from visual art to describe sounds. We speak of orchestral ‘colours,’ of ‘brightness’ or ‘darkness,’ and so on.” Paint the Light had its genesis in Ryan’s fascination with actual colours and his interest in the transformation of “colours” within a piece of music.
