For violin, cello, and piano.

Prompted both by the polyphonic nature of Bach’s Musical Offering and the spirit of adventure it evinces, Daniel chose to freely rewrite Frederick’s theme, using fragments and motifs from it. His second movement, for instance, uses the original’s descending chromatic scale; Daniel sets his motifs contrapuntally, using compact baroque archetypes. In regards to Bach’s “spirit of invention,” he comments: “I contacted my fellow composers and asked them if they would supply me with fragments of their own interpretations. I then integrated their music into my own, creating an adaptation of an adaptation.”

Performed by The Gryphon Trio.
