Original text by Anton Piatigorsky

for soprano and chamber ensemble (flute, oboe, clarinet/bass clarinet, bassoon, vibraphone/MallteKat, piano, violin I, violin II, viola, cello, contrabass)

“Sassy peep-toe pumps with jewel ornament.” “Silver sling-backs with slip-resistant soles.” “Espadrille grosgrain ribbon ankle-wraps.” These wonderfully exotic-sounding, rhythmically luxuriant phrases are just some of the actual descriptions of female footwear, discovered online, that inspired playwright Anton Piatigorsky to write his libretto for Current’s light-hearted look at the seductive power of consumer commodities. As a young woman who works as a shoe-store clerk daydreams about shoe ownership on a grand scale, her inner reverie alternating with her rapid-fire recital of the romantically named stock of which she is taking inventory, Current makes use of his signature “slanted time” to suggest the character’s underlying neurosis. While the vocal line remains relatively straightforward, the accompanying ensemble builds up layer upon layer of trills and accelerating tempos, providing the perfect musical metaphor for a frenetic desire-driven consumer culture in which speeding up and losing control become the normal state of life.
